Delhi Airport has implemented a variety of innovative strategies to minimize its water footprint, including water recycling and the installation of efficient fixtures. Key objectives include:

Water Management :

  • Enhancing Source Augmentation through rainwater harvesting structures and storage facilities.
  • Upgrading Water Infrastructure with efficient distribution systems and sustainable design.
  • Recycling and Reusing Wastewater to reduce overall consumption.
  • Implementing Smart Water Metering and Monitoring for real-time tracking and optimization.
  • Promoting Water Conservation through awareness campaigns and the adoption of best practices across operations.

Initiatives

Water-Efficient Infrastructure

Delhi Airport has invested in water-efficient infrastructure as part of its commitment to sustainable water management. This includes the installation of low-flow fixtures such as faucets, aerators, and water-saving toilets, which help minimize water usage without compromising functionality. Additionally, the airport employs sensor-activated systems for faucets and urinals, ensuring water is only used when necessary. The landscaping features drought-resistant plants, while smart irrigation systems optimize water consumption. These initiatives collectively support the airport's efforts to significantly reduce its water footprint and promote sustainability.

Smart Water Meters

Smart metering for water management at Delhi Airport is a key component of its water management strategy, aimed at optimizing water usage and improving efficiency. By installing advanced water meters equipped with real-time monitoring and data analytics, the airport can track water consumption across various areas and detect inefficiencies promptly.

Sewage Treatment Plant

To conserve and sustain water resource at Delhi Airport, an advanced Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) of 16.6 MLD treats the sewage water generated within the airport. The STP is equipped with advanced tertiary treatment facilities and membrane filtration units. The treated water is being used for HVAC, flushing and horticulture activities of IGIA.

Water Treatment Plant

Delhi Airport's Water Treatment Plant (WTP) of 5 MLD capacity is designed to treat and purify water for various airport operations. It ensures a consistent supply of high-quality water for potable use, contributing to the airport's sustainability efforts and efficient water management practices.

Rainwater Harvesting Structure

Delhi Airport has implemented a comprehensive rainwater harvesting system with more than 625 structures within airport. This initiative helps augment the airport's water supply, reduce dependency on external sources, and support its goal of becoming water positive.
